BANGALORE: This project could relieve you from walking with your nose closed between the garbage thrown across City. The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) has launched a pilot project to collect and segregate garbage at local level.

The pilot project is showing good results and the civic body is likely to implement the same all over the city. The project, being implemented by Ulsoor, Mysore Road, Rajajinagar and Peenya zonal offices of the BMP, takes the help of rag pickers to segregate the waste and recycle plastic and other wastes. Unlike other such programmees, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) are not involved in it.

In this project, the waste, collected from commercial establishments and houses in the pushcarts and the autorickshaws, will be segregated at Binny Limited, rather than being carried in trucks to the dumpyards, where the garbage is difficult to segregate.

BMP sources said, “the large vehicles carry the waste to the dumpyards where the rag pickers do not segregate the waste in a proper fashion, leading to increased pollution level at the time of decomposition.”

The areas initially concentrated are Chickpet and Rajajinagar, as a varied quantity of garbage is accumulated. The method of collection, segregation and recycling is closely monitored on weekly basis.

“The reports of this pilot study will be presented to the BMP Commissioner and Joint Commissioner after three months,” a BMP official said. “Segregation of large amounts of battery cells and pith which are hazardous to humans is monitored and the weight and sale of the garbage”, the official added.
