‘Helmet rule not in public interest’
‘Helmet rule not in public interest’

Those who are proposing to enforce this as a rule travel in chauffeur-driven cars. How would they know the plight of the common man? Helmets for pillion riders is another regressive idea. Plans to implement this rule only looks like an attempt to please certain sections of the public.

Educate public
I feel there should be no rule to make wearing helmets compulsory. Let the individual decide on this. The State government should concentrate on improving roads and ensuring lane discipline on roads. Instead of mandatory enforcement, the focus should be on educating the people on the advantages of wearing helmets and cautious riding.

Inviting trouble
The right to choice – to wear or not to wear helmets – should be given to the two-wheeler riders. Helmets have been identified with health issues like hair loss. Further, a rule to make helmets mandatory will make tougher the police task of tracing unidentified miscreants like chain snatchers.

No to helmets
Helmets should not be made compulsory for the simple reason that there are many other wrongs in traffic management that need to be corrected on priority.
Let the decision to wear helmets or not, be left to the public. Any way, riders who take highways and long-distance routes are already using helmets.

Wear them
Prevention is better than cure. Considering the present traffic situation we have, a crash helmet becomes a must for the rider and the pillion rider. This rule should be implemented as soon as possible.

Wrong priority
Before implementing the helmet rule, the government should maintain good roads and street lights. Further, traffic police should take serious action against erring drivers.
A good number of accidents could have been avoided with these measures. Let’s decide on helmets later.
