Mono Rail now on map?

Mono Rail now on map?
The Times of India

Bangalore: Now that the Bangalore Metro Rail project has begun, even the Mono Rail is catching up. Rail India Technical and Economic Services on Tuesday made a presentation to the government on Mono Rail for the city.

RITES came up with suggested corridors for the Mono Rail system in its presentation before chief secretary B K Das along with key government agencies like BMP, BMTC and BDA.

A government order issued to RITES last month had asked them to identify three traffic corridors for the Mono Rail system. RITES identified five corridors based on the population, employment and land area across 159 traffic zones (137 fall within BMP limits) of Bangalore. However, the government will examine the proposed routes before considering any further action.

The RITES study compared various probable transport systems like bus, street cars and commuter rails and their efficiency levels across different parts of the city.

BMTC has taken the cue from the traffic corridors and reacted with swiftness. They’ve not only decided to step up buses along these routes, but are also examining the possibility of having BMTC corridors in them.

BMTC has also decided to start a corridor along ring road from the clogged Central Silk Board junction to Hebbal and are awaiting a feasibility report from RITES. “Since it’s a six-lane road, we can always take up two lanes for buses to build connectivity in that path,’’ say sources. So expect not just the regular BMTC buses, but also the cheery Volvo buses on the route. As the BMTC has always maintained, nothing aids these luxury buses better than exclusive corridors.

Tentative corridors Corridor I: Kanakapura Road to Mysore Road along Ring Road.
Corridor II: Kathriguppe to National College, Basvanagudi
Corridor III: Bannerghatta National Park to Adugodi along Bannerghatta Road
Corridor IV: Tumkur Road to Bellary Road along Ring Road
Corridor V: Mysore Road to Tumkur Road along Ring Road
