BIAL buzzes with activity

Bangalore: One year into construction: The site at Bangalore’s dream international airport at Devanahalli is heartwarming, with eight buildings already up and buzzing with activity.
“About 28% of the construction work is done,’’ said BIAL officials, indicating that the airport is on schedule. The 65 metres air traffic control tower, being built in ‘lifts’ of 2.5 metres for every 10 days, has touched nearly the halfway mark — it is 30 metres high!
The boundary wall and a second air-side security wall inside it are both almost complete — only the south side of the airport remains to be built. The BIAL logo has been embossed all along on the outer wall.
At the seven acre terminal building, which will house about 11 million passengers annually, the first section of the ground floor roof — that is, the floor of the first story — has been cast. Both the ground floor and the basement are complete.
Earthwork on the new area — 7,500 sq metres — added after the redesign to accommodate more passengers is 70% complete. The fastest work has been on the administrative building — all plastering work is done. The staircases, toilets, flooring and plumbing are being done.
Former infrastructure minister P G R Sindhia, during whose tenure the work on the airport commenced on July 2, 2005, is trying to get permission for Mysore Sales International Limited also to handle cargo in partnership with Indian Airlines. Presently two groups — Singapore Airlines-Air India and Bobba Group-Menezies consortia are allowed. He met Union civil aviation minister Praful Patel in New Delhi recently who has asked him to submit a letter in this regard.
