KMRP project on track

KMRP project on track
The project will involve complete development of 41 roads in the city at a cost of Rs 140 crores, and will be taken up in four phases
The Times of India

It seems like the Bangalore City Corporation (BCC) is all set for a road infrastructure overhaul with the work on the Karnataka Municipal Reforms Project (KMRP) being carried out 24/7. Come October, seven roads in Bangalore are slated to be ready that are comparable to the best in Mumbai or Delhi, to say nothing of international standards. The money and the resources being pumped onto these roads speak volumes - even 2 kms of road length is worth Rs 3 crore.

The project funded by the World Bank through the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development Corporation (KUIDFC), which is the nodal agency for KRMP alone has seven roads in the first phase on which work is currently under progress. The project will involve complete development of 41 roads in the city at a cost of Rs 140 crores and will be taken up in four phases.

Bangalore's showpiece M G Road, Brigade Road, are not a patch on these upcoming KMRP roads, declare officials. `Basically these roads are designed for a life of ten years whereas typically roads are designed for three years. This is done after a traffic study indicating the traffic growth in the next seven and a half years. The techinical specifications are also like never before'' they explain.

Hitherto if a really good road boasted of layers of bituminous macadam, these roads have a 50 mm thick layer of BM, which officials say is for strengthening and rehabilitating the roads during duress. A noteworthy feature of the KMRP roads is also is an element called `over profile corrective course' with minor corrections on the roads. Upon this layer will be a riding surface of 40 mm of bituminous concrete, this is the surface where the tyres touch the roads, this is the surface that determines if commuters will declare a road good, bad or ugly.
For perspective, even the best roads in Bangalore presently have a surface of 25 mm of bituminous concrete.

And this is just the beginning. The roads will also have upgraded drainage system, sidewalks, kerbs, street furniture, central road markings with thermoplast paint. The seven roads that are being taken up in the first phase are: Bannerghatta Road from Luskar Hosur Road to 100 Feet Ring Road in J P Nagar 3rd phase, Kathriguppa Main Road from 100 Feet Ring Road to Vidyapeetha Circle, Padarayanapura Main Road from Tank Bund Road to Chord Road, Kammanhalli Main Road from Maruthi Seva Nagar to 100 Feet Ring Road, road connecting Ejipura Main Road near Infant Jesus Church to Sarjapur Road, road from N R Square to Hosur Road via Mission Road, Blood Bank Circle and Langford Road and Magadi Road from Mysore deviation road junction to Sunkadakatte.
