Eviction of footpath vendors ordered

The Malleswaram market in 8th Cross is likely to get a face-lift soon, if things go as per Chief Minister Kumaraswamy’s directions. Following a visit to the market area on Saturday, Mr Kumaraswamy has issued directions to the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike to initiate steps to modernise the market. He also said that he would hold a meeting of officials and vendors soon to find a permanent solution to the problems there.
Mr Kumaraswamy who decided to inspect the market based on media reports and ‘letters to the editor’ in Prajavani in this regard has issued directions to the BMP to clear obstacles and encroachments along the footpath and to turn the market into a supermarket.
Members of the Malleswaram New Market Merchants’ Association had submitted a memorandum to Mr Kumaraswamy recently.
Contention
Their contention was that though the new market complex had 300 authorised stalls paying monthly rent to the BMP, their businesses were affected by the flower and vegetable vendors, encroaching the footpaths.
Besides, the market also faces a severe lack of basic amenities like drinking water and toilet facilities. “Lack of cleanliness and no proper means to dispose garbage is a bane,” Mr N Venk-ataswamy, President of the Association said.
