Police Say It’s Not A Policy Move To Ban Vehicles

Bangalore: Traders on Brigade Road have pitched in to ease congestion on the road, the city’s favourite shopping jaunt , and begun to take corrective steps to ensure smooth flow of traffic.
This follows the traffic police’s move to regulate vehicles on the road during evening hours. The plan will come into effect on Saturday.
Traders, represented by Brigades Shops and Establishments, on Friday came down heavily on bottlenecks on the road. Speaking to The Times of India, Suhail Yusuff, secretary of Brigades Shops and Establishments said “We have deputed a person armed with a video camera to film unauthorised double-lane parking and other traffic violations. The film will be sent to traffic police so that they can slap fine on the violators.’’
“We have employed four additional security guards with walkie talkies to regulate traffic and clear bottlenecks. They will also prevent jaywalking. Two towing vehicles have been pressed into service to remove vehicles parked unauthorisedly,’’ Suhail adds. What police say: DCP, traffic (east) M A Saleem says it is not a policy decision to close the road during prescribed hours on Saturdays. “We will stop vehicles when Brigade Road finds it difficult to take the load.” The police will barricade the Arts & Craft junction (M G Road-Brigade Road intersection) on Saturday around 7 pm during peak hour. The road will be closed till the number of vehicles come down. “If the situation improves as the traders claim, we will not stop the vehicles,’’ Saleem adds.
