BANGALORE: The proposed monorail project for Bangalore would be the best available urban transport system if implemented, according to Srinidhi Anantharaman, an expert on the subject.

Addressing a function organised by Institution of Engineers here on Friday evening, Srinidhi also termed monorail as quite economical and a project with minimum disruption while implementation. Managing director of Geodesic techniques, Srinidhi reminded that monorail was adjudged as the best instrument to decongest cities all over the world while comparing with other amenities like flyovers, high capacity buses and heavy rail transit systems.

According to him, it was tested successfully for the first time by a German company in 1952. Most of the Japanese cities have adopted monorail as their major public transport system as it stands accident free, comfortable and reliable, according to him. It’s environment friendly and causes little disruption to those living close to the project areas.

‘‘It needs minimum land acquisition. It requires low foot print of two square metres on the ground. Monorail can even be implemented on road medians,’’ Srinidhi explained.

It would not reduce the scope for road transport and would coexist with other modes of transport, he said.

During the last 42 years of monorail, no collision or derailing was reported, according to him.

A six car train can transport at least 4700 passengers at one time, he said.
