Rain leaves Domlur in doldrums

Rain leaves Domlur in doldrums

BANGALORE: It has begun to rain hard, and upmarket localities off Airport Road don’t like it one bit.

Residents of the first three crosses in Domlur II Stage (Ward No. 72) are victims of flood waters gushing out of a drain near the Indiranagar-Airport Road flyover.

For years, rains have only brought and deposited tons of silt in the drain, and these have become fertile places for shrubs to grow. Shrubs have made the open drains shallow, hindering smooth flow of water.

According to R G Rao and P B Dave, life becomes a nightmare whenever it pours.‘Since this stormwater drain is clogged with silt and undergrowth, waters flood the road and all houses on I Cross and other roads. Many times, we have spent the night on terraces,’’ they said.

Adding to their woes is the sewerage water getting into the sumps in their houses and polluting the water. Satish Rao, a resident, says people have suffered huge losses due to water entering houses and damaging all the household electrical items and furniture.

‘‘We are living under constant fear whenever it rains and it is impossible to get in or out of the house as the water is sometimes 4 to 5 feet deep,’’ he said.

They have narrated their misery to every authority and public servant in sight - from BMP authorities to the local corporator to the area MLA. But all that they have got so far are only assurances and no concrete action.
