Debris, muck are cleared in one day

Debris, muck are cleared in one day

Bangalore: The BMP has woken up. Tonnes of garbage, silt and debris, lying by the side of the under-construction Airport Road-Indiranagar flyover for long, were cleared up in a jiffy on Friday. This, after telling photographs given by a civic-conscious citizen were published in these columns.

Pourakarmikas and BMP staff rushed to the spot on Friday afternoon to clear tonnes of construction debris, gunny sacks of household garbage, commodes, et al.

The large drain, which is part of the Chalaghatta valley, has been the bane of BMP for years now. Even a ‘moderate’ rainfall was enough to choke the drain and block all of Airport Road, Kodihalli, parts of Indiranagar and Koramangala.

A fortnight ago, the BMP launched an initiative called SWORD to check indiscriminate dumping of debris by all and sundry, in the night.

The SWORD team says they have caught at least eight instances of dumping by offenders at this particular drain. While no case has been filed against them, they have been let off with a stringent warning.
