Mayor reverses hoarding ban

BANGALORE: Expect more hoardings blocking the sky. More sirens beckoning you to buy stuff. Mayor Mumtaz Begum is ready to reverse the ban on hoardings.

Begum had constituted a committee to examine the proposal of the standing committee on taxation and finance to ban hoardings. While her committee comprised deputy mayor M Laxminarayana, ruling party leader H Ravindra, and opposition leader B R Nanjundappa, Ravindra did not attend the meeting held on Thursday.

Ravidra told this paper that he was informed about the meeting at the last minute and he had written about the matter to the mayor.

Laxminarayana said that many hoardings had stay orders against their removal and Begum’s committee had instructed officials only to take action against unauthorised hoardings.

Pay and Park: Laxminarayana said that the decision on pay and park was not taken as BJP leader A H Basavaraju had objected to the proposal.

‘‘Though the government had not approved the BMP proposal for free parking, we have not arrived at any decision. We will refer the issue to the government,’’ he added.

BJP told us that pro-rich policies will eventually trickle down to the down-trodden. People like this Basavaraj were working hard to plug such trickling down of the rich man's money. They made the municipal corporation ban the collection of parking fees saying it was being collected "illegally". They shouted down anyone who wanted to regulate the parking scene. There is a $6 toll to enter Manhattan and parking can leave you poorer by another $30. All this money in the capital of capitalism goes to public services.
