Bangalore to get largest cardiac care centre

Bangalore: The city will soon have one of the largest cardiac centres in the country. The Wockhardt Hospital and Heart Institute is charting out additional specialised treatment facilities.
As per the plan, it will have a team of 20 heart specialists, over 12 operation theatre, a 400-bed additional facility on Bannerghatta Road and 125 more beds for the Intensive Care Unit. They will also start a cardiac referral centre for its eight hospitals.
“The new team will give us the opportunity to compartmentalise and specialise further in our own stream,” says chief cardio-vascular surgeon Dr Jawali. “They will look into paediatric cardiology, adults with paediatric problems, rhythm defects and heart failure.”
The group, which already has eight facilities across the country, is now targeting for the gold seal — an accreditation from the US-based Joint Commission International based on hospital performance in over 3,000 specified modules. The Mumbai centre received the gold seal only a few months ago. Now, the group is targeting a similar feat for the Bannerghatta Road centre.
A recent study pointed that there are less than 30,000 beds, in government and private sector, for a 70 lakh population in the city. The situation in rural Karnataka is worse with 1 bed for a population of over 10,000.
According to hospital CEO Vishal Bali, the ICU sector is the worst hit with most hospitals converting wards into step-down ICUs to accommodate patients. To change this, the hospital will set up ICUs in HSR layout, Rajajinagar and Nagarabhavi.
