First tackle flooding, CM’s diktat to BMP

BANGALORE : “First, tacklethe flooding in low-lying areas,” directed Chief Minis ter H D Kumaaraswamy onWednesday, when Banga lore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) Commissioner K Jairaj rushed to apprise him of the rain situation.

“Sudden showers in the City has hampered most of our civil works. However, we have evolved an action plan to prioritise our works,” said Jairaj, while updating the CM about BMP’s plan to tide over the crisis.

“Intensify the desilting efforts, strengthen thecanals and clear all encroachments along the Ra jakaluves (canals),”ordered the CM, after listen ing to the brief on various development works stalled by rains. “Untimely rains are worrying us. We are forced to stall all asphalting work. Even the temporary work on stormwater drains has taken a beating,” said Jairaj, adding that the BMP had identified at least 30 wards with low-lying areas.

“However, we are hope ful of completing most ofthe works as per plan - be fore the monsoon,” added the Commissioner.

Monsoon alert

The Chief Minister hasset the KPTCL and the pow er supplying companies ona monsoon-alert mode. Af ter the heavy rains in the last few days affected power supply network in different areas of the state includingBangalore, the chief minis ter on Wednesday directedthe power supply compa nies to immediately launch precautionary measuresbefore the onset of the mon soon.

While the recent rainshave thrown up power prob lems due to uprooting of trees on the power lines, the previous monsoon season had resulted in technical snags with respect to the power supply network.

Mr Kumaaraswamy re portedly asked the officials to review the condition of the power network ahead of monsoon.

According to sources, healso asked the revenue commissioner to take precau tionary steps ahead of the monsoon throughout the State.
