The light drizzle on Monday night brought some relief to Bangaloreans, who were feeling the summer heat for the last few weeks.

The city received rainfall of 0.7 mm.

Umbrellas will become a necessity for Bangaloreans as the week is likely to be wet and city might get showers in the evenings.

Talking to Deccan Herald, Dr A L Koppar, Director, Indian Meteorological Department, Bangalore, explained, “the showers in summer are an usual phenomenon. “

“The process has only just begun and the activity is expected to get stronger in the latter part of April and the first week of May. The rainfall is actually occurring in a subdued manner and will continue till the latter part of mid-April,” he added.

He said there was thick concentration of moisture-laden clouds in south interior Karnataka, leading to short spells of rainfall in isolated regions in April. The region comprises Bangalore and surrounding districts.

Sporadic spells of rainfall were likely in the entire Karnataka region in April and thunder showers might occur in greater frequency as the summer progresses. The rain distribution was sparse in north Karnataka and north interior Karnataka, he said.

Explaining the impact of summer showers on agricultural crops, Dr M P Rajegowda, Agrometerology, UAS, Bangalore, said “The rains are helpful for horticultural crops and pulses. In north Karnataka it is the harvesting time for Bengal gram and this rainfall may have an adverse effect on the crop.”

“Also the summer showers help in land preparation in plain regions making it conducive for growth of new crops during the monsoons,” h eadded.
