Mindless parking a menace here

Bangalore: Reckless driving, congested roads, and lack of pedestrian safety, road signages and signals. These were among the many issues that Rotarians in Indiranagar raised during an interactive session on traffic on Monday.
Hassles related to parking, however, topped the list at the session. Several residents complained of haphazard parking outside their homes by scores of motorists who frequent shops and restaurants that have mushroomed in the area.

At the session organised by Rotary Club of Indiranagar, DCP Traffic (East) M A Saleem, who made a presentation on traffic management, said that projects drawn in the Indiranagar Local Area Traffic Management Plan in 2003 are being implemented in a phased manner.

While asserting that motorists should inculcate traffic discipline, he said there has been haphazard development without proper planning (conversion of residential buildings into commercial establishments).

K V Pathy, a resident, said there is a lack of measures for pedestrian safety. “Considering there are over 60 per cent pedestrians, 40 per cent accidents involving pedestrians is attributed to lack of safety,’’ he said.
Another resident called for better discipline among road users saying accidents are not because of bad roads but reckless driving. Many participants sought for more stringent enforcement which they said would be a deterrent for violators.

Saleem, in reply to the queries said, several measures were being taken up to improve traffic conditions.
