Grid bus system

HOLD your breath! Bangalore’s transportation system may soon be second to only that of a City like Paris. If everything goes according to the plan of the Commuters’ Comfort T ask Force (CCTF), commuters in Bangalore are all set to have a great time in another six months. T Th he e f fo or rm ma at ti io on n The CCTF , after many brain storming sessions, came up with the ’Grid’ system of buses that suits radial Cities like Bangalore. The task force, headed by its Chairman R V Bhosekar , was formed three years ago to come up with measures that would enhance commuter comfort.

The CCTF , which also has NGO’s and activists, was formed to study , discuss and deliberate the concerns of commuters and find solutions.

The grid system will facilitate connections on parallels in the City and also along concentric circles on the Ring Road. This will ensure that all parts of the City are well-connected and therefore commuters can get to any destination within the City and would not have to board more than two buses. N No o m mo or re e w wa ai it ti in ng g All one has to do is to hop in and hop out of a bus to reach the desired destination in limited time. This is possible only with the improvised grid system, which is designed basically to improve the connectivity of the BMTC buses.

W aiting for buses for long hours at BMTC bus stops would be a thing of the past, as under this system, the frequency of buses would increase. C Co on nn ne ec ct ti iv vi it ty y, , f fr re Explaining more about the concept, Grahak Shakti managing trustee V K Somasekhar , who is also a committee member , said, "In this system, all routes within the four directions will be covered. No single part of the City will be ignored. The success of the grid concept also depends on the feeder system, where the buses make frequent rotations in that particular area." N Ne ea ar re er r b bu us s s st to op ps s "The grid system should go along with a good feeder system which ensures proper connectivity at different points to touch the grid. With this, commuters will not have to walk beyond 500 mts from their residence to the bus stop," he said.

For instance, under the system, if one wishes to reach Indiranagar from Malleswaram, all that a commuter will have to do is take a direct ticket to Indiranagar . They may alight in between and then catch the other bus to that destination without additional cost. In order make the concept more commuter-friendly , the committee has decided to bring in a colour code that will help the commuter identify the particular direction the bus plies. P Pr ro oj je ec ct t b by y O Oc ct to ob be At present, about 15 routes have already been introduced and another 25 will be shortly introduced. The entire project is likely to be complete by the end of October .

Jayashri Ravindra, another committee member , said that the sole idea of grid system is to get back the splendour of Bangalore with a suitable answer for mass transport and making travel within the City more pleasant.
