BANGALORE: Jayanagar bus terminus, one of the oldest and busiest BMTC bus stations, lacks adequate passenger amenities.
The ‘L’ shaped terminus, which covers a one-acre ground, is very congested due to the large number of buses that arrive. The situation has turned quite unmanageable.
The terminus, which was set up in the early 60s, before the construction of Jayanagar commercial complex, has only a big tree as shelter. There are over seven smaller shelters. The route details displayed behind these shelters are most often covered by handbills.
BMTC officials including the traffic controller sit in makeshift room, which was once a hotel. The so-called office is not furnished properly.
According to a senior resident of Jayanagar, the terminus, which received only a few buses earlier, is now deluged with hundreds of them. The BMTC cannot expand the terminus, as there are many commercial complexes nearby.
However, BMTC chief engineer (civil) M Dileep said that tender has been called to modernise the bus station. The project includes a commercial complex, parking lot and other basic facilities, and these are estimated to cost Rs 8.5 crore.
The problem is compounded as the adjacent foot over bridge is under utilised. “The public should use the foot over bridge and this will certainly reduce the congestion,” a BMTC driver said.
