Railways has its hands full

Bangalore: While more trains will chug out of Bangalore, it will no longer be a tedious wait at railway crossings in some busy parts of the city, including Mysore Road.
Among other projects, the railway budget this time has approved four road over bridges (RoBs) in Bangalore area; gauge conversion of Kolar-Chikballapur line and doubling of tracks up to Bidadi.
The RoBs will come up one each in Hebbal-Bannasandra (Gate No 142) and across Tumkur Highway (G No 4) in Yeshwanthpur, and two across Mysore Road (at Gate Nos 4 and 5) in Bangalore-Nayandahalli.
A senior South Western Railway (SWR) official said the RoBs, to be set up in place of level crossings, will be taken up with state sharing. “There are adequate funds for RoBs and works will be taken up shortly after talks with authorities concerned,’’ the officer said. Construction of RoBs are done in tandem with the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike.
With the gauge conversion of the 80-km Kolar-Chikballapur section approved, a Rs 5-crore allocation has been made in the budget in the first phase. Funds have also been put aside for completion of track doubling on Tumkur side — Gollahalli up to Nidawanda.
