According to surces, there will be an increase of Rs 1 per kilometre, that is, to Rs 6 from the existing Rs 5 per kilometre.

Brace yourselves for a hike in auto fares. From March 15, you will have to cough up Rs 12 to travel a distance of two kms in an autorickshaw against the current fare of Rs 10.

The Regional Transport Authority (RTA), Bangalore Urban, on Monday cleared an increase of Rs 1 per kilometre based on a long pending demand from the Autorickshaw Drivers Union (ADU). The last revision in fares was in 2002.

A decision to this effect was taken by a technical committee comprising representatives of the Weights and Measures department, autorickshaw drivers and the traffic police. The RTA approved the proposal.

According to surces, there will be an increase of Rs 1 per kilometre, that is, to Rs 6 from the existing Rs 5 per kilometre. Under the revised fare chart, the minimum distance, which is now considered as two kilometres, will be reduced to 1.6 kilometres and the public will have to pay Rs 10 for 1.6 kilometres. The RTA is preparing a fare conversion chart and will issue it to the public soon, sources added.

The ADU had demanded revision of fares and extension of ESI facility to auto drivers, which set the ball rolling for considering a fare hike. The RTA has set June 31 as the deadline for conversion of autorickshaws to use LPG as fuel.
