Justice Michael F Saldanha, former judge, Karnataka High Court on Sunday said erosion of values and poor infrastructure is making Bangalore an increasingly difficult City to live in.

At a law book release function of author Prabha Sharma at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Justice Saldanha was full of anecdotes to denote the falling standards in the City.

Some of the distinctions held by Bangalore according to studies conducted by experts, said Justice Saldanha, are as follows:

* The average speed of a vehicle on our roads is 5.7 km an hour, while that of a bullock cart is 10 km

* Vehicle users honk and want to overtake others even while the traffic light is red

* The intellectual and cultural quality here is deteriorating, leading to “absolute goondaism” on busy roads

* As a State capital, Bangalore has the highest number of dowry deaths in the country

* Bangalore airport is the worst airport in India

* The BMP is 13 per cent more corrupt than its Pune counterpart, pipping it to the first place

* Bangalore resembles Bihar in the breakdown of law and order

scenario

* Lawyers here write books without conducting adequate research

* The courtrooms in Bangalore are overloaded making it difficult for the needy to get speedy justice

* The dullest of human beings join the police force

Lauding Ms Prabha for inculcating compliance of laws by dedicating her book “Law and Social Justice” to the public, former justice Saldanha hoped that Bangaloreans will work collectively towards improving their City.

The Sun Publications book, costing Rs 70, has chapters on the Cauvery issue, Jayalalithaa, Lokayukta, laws pertaining to working women, patents, the Armed Forces Act, comparison of American and Indian legal scenario and laws pertaining to the future.
