BANGALORE: The country’s first steel flyover will be built in the city at Shantala Circle in a couple of months.

The flyover to be built by the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) will not only ease traffic at the circle but will also cause no traffic congestion at the time of construction. The 455-metre long flyover will be erected in only two months. But the cost of this flyover is nearly 1.7 times more than the conventional flyover.

“For the Shantala Circle mobile flyover, we have estimated the cost to be around Rs 27 to Rs 29 crore,” BDA commissioner M N Vidyashankar told this this website's newspaper.

The flyover will be a two way between railway station and Shantala Silk stores.

“Tenders for the project will be called for in two weeks’ time,” he said.

The flyover will be fabricated at the factory and then the structure will be brought to the site. Here, the flyover will be fixed in one or two months.

The work will be carried out mostly at night. “This will not cause much inconvenience to the public. The traffic will also not be disrupted during the day,” he said.

The best part about steel or mobile flyovers is that they can be dismantled and installed at a different location.

“After some years, if we feel that the flyover is not required, we can put it up at another place, which has similar turns. This makes it cost efficient,” he said.

The flyover at Shantala Circle will be built on a trial basis. If it succeeds here, mobile flyovers will be erected at other junctions as well.

There is a proposal to build a similar flyover at Trinity Circle. But the flyover plan here has been hampered with the metro rail passing through the circle.

BDA plans to discuss it with the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited.
