Karnataka governor T N Chaturvedi on Thursday lamented the poor infrastructure facilities, especially roads, in the city and stressed the need for moving swiftly on these fronts, even as he hoped the metro rail project will considerably help ease traffic congestion.

In his Republic Day address, the governor said infrastructure in Bangalore needs to be commensurate with international standards to maintain the momentum of development.

Stating that the much-awaited metro rail project will help considerably ease traffic congestion on the roads of Bangalore, Chaturvedi said the work on improved roads, flyovers as well as water-supply and sewage systems must gather speed as well as efficiency.

“It is imperative that in this huge task, public cooperation, consultation and participation be enhanced formally and otherwise,” he said. “Transparency, quality and sense of urgency must be our watchwords.”

On naxalism raising its head in the state, the governor said he expects administrative agencies to work in unison, seek cooperation of the people and ensure that the development schemes fructify as designed to the complete satisfaction of the intended beneficiaries.

Expressing grave concern over the December 28 terror attack on the campus of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Chaturvedi said: “we hope to bring the culprits to book in no distant future as the authorities have achieved commendable success in their investigations.”

“Necessary efforts are on to ensure that as far as possible the terrorist group is destroyed so that such unfortunate incidents are prevented,” he said.
