The flower show closes on January 26. Entry is priced at Rs 15 per adult and Rs 5 per child and the Lalbagh Gardens is open from 9 to 8 pm.

You often see these not-so-familiar fruits on the pavement near M G Road but you don’t know what they are. Even the vendor at times does not know their correct names. Well, if you are really curious to know the names of these exotic fruits, here’s your chance to check them out at the Republic Day Flower Show at Lalbagh Botanical Gardens this year.

An exhibition of minor fruits put up by the Department of Horticulture makes you knowledgeable about these so-called exotic and lesser known fruits. Comprising Rambutan, Mangosteen, Rose Apple, Carambola, Kamarak, Ph-alsa, Durian, Pummelo, Bilimbi etc., the stall gives brief details about the origin of these fruits and their nutritional content.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Director of the Department of Horticulture G K Vasanth Kumar said that they had been planning to put up a stall of these not-so-common fruits for a while.

“It is not enough to just focus on major crops as minor crops too play an important role, mainly in drought proofing. When major crops like mango reach saturation, alternative crops come into the picture,” he said.

Though in existence for a very long time, these fruits are little known because the extent of their cultivation and the market is less, he added.
