Bangalore: The revised deadline painted on the much-hyped and equally controversial Airport-Indiranagar flyover stares mutely at the the diverted traffic and the chaos on road.
It takes at least one 20 minutes during peak hour to take this route, says Rajesh, a software employee. “It’s been 15 minutes since my car moved a few inches and there is no
sign when I would again press the accelerator. I hate to attend a meeting after driving though this maddening traffic,’’ he laments.
For Rajesh, a resident of Indiranagar, no matter how early he leaves home, the less than 2-km drive takes at least half-an-hour. And the flyover has for over two years remained the pet peeve of all residents associations in and around Indiranagar. Says a member of DECORA, an association in Defence Colony: “We have been told by the civic authorities that the flyover this time would be completed by October. We are hoping it would.’’
For many working women, it’s the cry over garbage. “The door-todoor collection of garbage is a great idea. But the civic authorities should not have removed the dustbins until they ensured that the programme is going on well,’’ says Bindu, a resident of Indiranagar, stage II. So what do the women do? “They leave the garbage outside and we collect it,’’ say the sweepers appointed by the BMP. “We are not supposed to collect it, but house owners tip us with Rs 30 a month.’’
That’s exactly why, some like Ranganathan, an activist, say that the storm drains are clogged. “There are times when the garbage waiting to be picked falls into the drains. There are polythene sheets, food packets strewn by the ignorant people. The fruit and vegetable vendors dump the perished goods. There is also construction debris dumped into the drains. None of these are cleared because the sweepers are busy collecting garbage!’’
But definitely, all residents admit that the area is not that bad. “I am a proud resident of Indiranagar. It has a lot of beautiful parks. Most roads unlike in neighbouring Koramangala are good.’’
