Car heavily tinted? God save you

Car heavily tinted? God save you
Get Your Vehicle Checked Before Jan. 15 Deadline
The Times of India

Bangalore: Come January 15, if you see a cop stopping your car and peering at it, don’t get alarmed. He is only measuring the amount of your car’s opacity in the rear shield and the windows with a light meter.

If you are smart and want to avoid such incidents, then head straight to the BRV Grounds off MG Road. The police have installed a light meter at the Grounds till January 8 for vehicle owners to get the glass tested free of cost. But no certificate will be issued like the one done for emission tests, says deputy commissioner of police (East) M A Saleem.

In the wake the IISc attack and the rape and murder of a BPO employee, the cops want greater transparency: They want the dark tinted sun film on glass shields of all four-wheelers stripped.

“They can go for tinted glass but it should be of ISO 2553 standard, and not those cheap dark films,’’ says Saleem.

But nearly 80% of four-wheelers in Bangalore go in for cheap dark sun films that are sold in the lanes of Kalasipalyam and Shivajinagar.

“Vehicle owners should pull down the dark films before we start acting,’’ Saleem warns while pointing out to the punishment —- Rs 100 fine to be paid only in the court and not on the spot.

“We are stepping up the drive against cars with heavily tinted glasses from Jan 15. We have already procured 20 light m e t e r s, each costing about Rs 4,800, to check car glasses for visual light transmission test.’’

But not all are enthusiastic about the latest move. Several senior police officers and politicians complain that the new rule would expose them to prying eyes.

Several women’s groups too have approached the city police stating that it would make women, who return home in the night, vulnerable to attacks from criminals.

Will the police take this hint on the tint?
Light & shade Section 100 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, makes it mandatory that the windshield and the rear shield of every vehicle have a visual transmission of light no less than 70 per cent and the side windows no less than 50 per cent.

For tint
Ensures privacy and provides security cover for VIPs Cools interiors during summer Belongings kept inside car would be safe Protection for women drivers in the night.

Against it
Reduces visibility, especially in the inside rear-view mirror. Judgemental errors by drivers is high. Helps rowdies and wanted criminals escape police dragnet Perpetrates crime against women while vehicle is on the move.
