In a surprise eviction drive undertaken by the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, over 200 illegal shops were evicted at the BMP commercial complex in Jayanagar IV Block from 5.30 am to 7.30 am on Thursday.

BMP inspectors, with support from the Jayanagar Police, forcefully threw wooden benches and boxes out at the complex entrance and Janata Bazaar premises, despite angry protests by vegetable and fruit vendors.

According to Sreenivasaiah, Deputy Commissioner (Market), BMP, notices were given to the hawkers but they were not heeded to. “The raid was conducted in response to a public complaint made to the BMP. The illegal encroachment on footpaths and passage ways were blocking the approach route to the complex, and made walking difficult for shoppers. We threw their hoarded articles and warned them to stay away from the complex entrance,” Sreenivasaiah added.

The Mahanagara Palike now plans to landscape the complex premises and build a park. The eviction was carried out in the presence of Sreenivasaiah, Sarojamma, Assistant Revenue Officer and Alok Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South).
