THE Bangalore City Corporation’s (BCC) ’Operation Koramangala’, a demolition drive against the buildings built in violation of bye-laws has been stalled for want of police cover , which has to be provided for VVIP visits to the City .

President APJ Abdul Kalam and Indonesian president Dr Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono were in the City on Monday .

According to BCC sources, though the officials were ready to go ahead with the demolition drive at any given point of time, they had been waiting for adequate police security to prevent any untoward incidents.

A meeting will be held with the BCC commissioner K Jothiramalingam shortly to chalk out a plan of action to continue the drive, said an engineer. BCC will adhere to the directions of the Court, he added.

However , he said that the BCC staff had been conducting inspections and surveys at Koramangala. An additional 200 buildings have been surveyed and 50 per cent of them have been found violating the norms. With this, the violations have gone up to 700. The survey is a continuous process, he added.

"Some of the residents have sought extra time from the BCC to either demolish or to vacate. Of the buildings surveyed, some have violations which could be compounded.

First, we will demolish 87 buildings and then go about with other buildings found deviating the norms, he said.
