BANGALORE: The residents of Banashankari have only one thing to complain about –- the badly maintained roads, which is a nightmare for motorists as water stagnates on them during the rainy season.

The roads in New Kempegowda Layout, Kaveri Nagar and Vivekananda Nagar have had this problem for the past four years. Says Raju, a shop-keeper in Kaveri Nagar,

“I have been in this locality for past eight years. In these years, the roads were repaired only once that too at the time of election. They have distributed the materials unevenly so that the roads are difficult to negotiate.

“They have been in the same condition for the past four years. The authorities neither clear the materials nor complete the work. It is such a mess here.”

Adds Akkamahadevi, resident of Kaveri Nagar, “I have been living in the locality for past 25 years. No roads have been laid in the locality except for one road.

“This gets really muddy. They make a lot of promises at the time of election but they are never fulfilled. In spite of this I still vote for them for the sake of voting.”

Corporator of Banashankari ward Venkatesh Murthy said the road has been in a bad condition for quite some time.

“I was elected four years ago. In these four years the first thing I took care of was water and sanitation issues,” he said. “However, the repair work of roads got delayed for various reason like rains, change of contractor.

“The construction of the road has been sanctioned to Kempanna, contractor from Mysore Construction Company, and the joint partners include Suresh and Vinod. Now about 50 per cent of the work has been done i.e., laying the material but the rest will be completed at the earliest.”

According to him Rs 30 crores have been spent on the wards and has been utilised in the construction of playgrounds, water, sanitation and so on.

Rs 2 crores have been sanctioned for the repair of roads. The repair of roads will be taken in November and Murthy promises to complete it by April in next year or even before that.
