Mega plans for Majestic

Majestic to go!
Existing Bus-Stand Will Give Way To New Complex
Plan Proposes KSRTC, BMTC, Metro Stations, Shopping Malls
The Times of India

Bangalore: One of the city’s bestknown landmarks, the gargantuan Majestic Bus Stand, will soon be gone. In its place will be a spanking new-age 45-storey architectural marvel, complete with amphitheatre, malls and food courts.

And the buses? They will be there too, though the bulk of operations will carry on from underground.

This masterplan also hopes to decongest Bangalore to a large degree: it will include the underground Metro Rail station, terminals for KSRTC inter-state buses and BMTC buses — all connected.

The Rs 500-crore integrated transport system will act as the nerve centre, ensuring that travellers coming into Bangalore and leaving will have at their disposal all systems of transport.

All this will come true if the proposal of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation gets the nod from the government. It will be constructed on BOOT

(Build-Own-Operate-Transfer) basis. KSRTC managing director M R Sreenivasa Murthy outlined what the 31 acres of land will be taken up for:
KSRTC: The bulk of services will be shifted to satellite terminal stations, and may be restricted to only 600-1,000 bus trips. The KSRTC and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRC) propose to shift the outgoing bus terminals to peripheral areas, to be connected by an executive coach service.

The KSRTC is holding discussions with the BDA for land on Bellary Road, Hosur Road (land yet to be identified) and Magadi Road to develop its satellite terminals. This should decongest Bangalore in a big way, says Murthy.

Already, the Mysore Road facility has been commissioned, and the KSRTC has got responses from 24 companies for the pre-qualification tenders.
BMTC: Only connecting BMTC buses will ply to Majestic. There is a plan to have private buses operate from the KSRTC terminals, for which bus stations are being planned.

BMRC: Will connect the underground Metro stations of the East-West and North-South corridors at Majestic, which will come up on two different levels, to the City Railway Station and the complex through a travelator. Another travelator will connect the building to the City Railway Station.

BMRC has also agreed to allocate 10 acres of land at its Peenya Metro Rail depot, and another 12 acres at NGEF land as part of its Byappanahalli Metro Rail station area to the KSRTC, BMRC managing director K N Shrivastava said.

The KSRTC and BMRC finalised the nitty-gritty of the plan before going to the government with their proposals.

Other features: The KSRTC will build an underground subway/ walkway for smooth passage. The bus stations will be underground and the buses will leave the complex through ramps on the periphery, without disturbing traffic around the area, said KSRTC chief civil engineer and estate officer S Jagadeesh Chandra. Bays for parking 5,000 cars and 10,000 two-wheelers will be provided for. There is also a proposal to build a helipad.

For the floating public: Amphitheatre, food courts, shops and landscaping to gladden the green heart.

2,600 bus arrivals/departures
1 lakh passengers
4 bus depots
22 acres of land

BMTC
