BANGALORE: Cement pipes confront pedestrians everywhere around Sheshadripuram. They occupy shop fronts and also the bus stand, where passengers used to sit. The pipes have been stacked in front of Nataraj theatre right up to Rajiv Gandhi Circle.

Even to cross the road, one has to search for paths among the pipes. Traders say that these pipes have been lying there for the last seven months.

These sewage pipes belong to the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB). The work ha sreachd an stasis owing to the rains in the City. The operations are expected to begin after the cessation of the rains.

Varun Rao, a shopkeeper, told this website’s newspaper that people used the pipes for all kinds of purposes. “While some sit on them and spit paan all around. Motorbikes are parked nearby and make the road even more congested,” he complains.

Another shopkeeper, Raviraj said that the pipes hindered the movement of customers. “The pipes are 10-feet-long and are heavy. We cannot move them to create a passage,” he said.

S K Pattanayak, BWSSB Chairman, said work on the pipeline would be completed within the next two months. “The work is in progress. As Bangalore City Corporation (BCC) granted permission for road-digging very late, the pipes will remain for some more time on the roadside,” he said.

BWSSB Executive Engineer, Ramakrishna, said work had been in progress since March 15. “Road-cutting was the initial problem and the railway track was the second worry.

Now the work has been cleared for the railway track and the work of laying pipe is on at the park behind Sheshadripuram police station.

“The contract was only for four months. As BCC permission was received late, work will be finished in the next two months,” he added.
