Bangalore: It was an outpour of woes, mostly from senior citizens demanding stern steps to streamline traffic and redressal to the related problems being faced in the upmarket Malleshwaram area during a Community and Police programme on Friday.

Taking a serious note of the situation, the authorities will be submitting an action taken report within a week.

While a majority of participants complained about traffic jams, violation of one ways, malfunctioning of signals, encroachments on footpaths besides rash driving, senior citizens were the most aggrieved ones being left unattended while crossing the road in the absence of police constables at vantage points. They also complained of youngsters taking to noisy motorcycles at odd hours.

Additional Commissioner of Police- Traffic, K V R Tagore directed the officials to initiate necessary steps immediately and submit an action taken report in this regard within a week.

Addressing the meet which was also attended by the local MLA, Tagore suggested that an Area Traffic Control study should be conducted by traffic experts so that they could submit their recommendation in a coordinated effort to solve traffic problems being faced in the area.

Referring to the success of the Safe Road to School programme being implemented in select localities, he said that it would soon be extended to Malleshwaram as well after working out the modalities in consultation with the residents within next one month.

He also assured on an on the spot redressal to certain problems which have cropped up time and again as pointed out by the residents.

While asking them to play a more proactive role by bringing to their notice traffic violations so as to bring the violators on records.

“We will take immediate action including suspending their licenses,'' he said. The city police has come out with Safe Road to Work programme where mass transport facilities will be promoted to restrict the number of vehicles plying on the roads. The programme will shortly be introduced to reduce traffic passing through residential areas.

City Police Commissioner Dr Ajai Kumar Singh called upon the agencies concerned to work together to make Bangalore a healthier place to live in with an active participation of public. DCPs Syed Ulfath Hussain, Basavaraj Y Malaghati, ACPs Lakshman Singh, Venkat Naik were present in the programme conducted by the Rotary Bangalore West and Malleswaram Swabhimanaa Initiative. VTN
