The proposals will be forwarded to Government for approval only after finalising tenders, in order to avoid delay in approval.

With majority of its ongoing mega city projects nearing completion, Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) is set to begin the work on three other infrastructure projects -- Grade Separator near Yeshwanthpur circle, Subway near Malleshwaram Circle and Rail Over Bridge at Mathikere railway level crossing.

These projects were kept on the back burner to avoid inconvenience to citizens, especially in traffic flow.

“With all ongoing projects expected to be completed next month, we have decided to begin work on these projects. The work is expected to begin in two month’s time, BMP Technical Advisor Jaiprasad told Deccan Herald.

Though BMP has drawn out plans to upgrade infrastructure across the city and has enough resources to implement them, it has been compelled to keep many of them pending in the interest of city’s traffic. “If many big projects are launched simultaneously, traffic will get choked. Hence, infrastructure projects are being implemented in a phased manner,” he explained.

The ongoing work on Rajajinagar Entrance Grade Separator, Modi Road-Chord Road junction subway, Nehrunagar and Cantonment extra carriage ways and Basavanagudi National college flyover will be completed next month.

A portion of the Rajajinagar Entrance and the Modi Road subway were recently opened up for traffic flow.

The grade separator is planned to be stretched between TATA Institute till railway line (near Yeshwanthpur bus stand) and is estimated to cost Rs 18 crores. The subway will be constructed at Malleshwaram circle and is estimated at Rs 12 crores. The cost of ROB in Mathikere is yet to be finalised. All these projects are planned to be completed in twelve months, he said.

BMP has already begun the tendering process and the work is expected to be taken up in two months’ time. Unlike in the past, the project proposals will be forwarded to Government for approval only after finalising tenders. This is being done to avoid delay in sanctioning approval by the Government.

The practice was to get the approval twice -- once for the concept plan and another for the tendering. “This used to consume lot of time and the projects had failed to take off as per schedules,” Mr Jaiprasad added.

New technique

To minimise inconvenience to vehicle users, BMP is adopting a new technique of construction of Malleshwaram Circle subway, wherein earth (digging) works will be started at the end.

Due to digging at the initial stages, traffic used to get severely affected from the beginning till the end of the project. Now this system will be done away with, Mr Jaiprasad explained.
