BANGALORE: To curb the increasing number of accidents during the early hours, the east division traffic police undertook a special drive to check offences on Thursday morning. The result: In two hours, 596 motorists were caught violating one-way rules!
The drive, conducted between 6 am and 8 am, has proved that violation of the one-way rule during the early hours is a major cause for accidents. ‘‘Several accidents have taken place in the early hours, many of them non-fatal,’’ DCP traffic (East), M.A. Saleem, told this website’s newspaper.
Often, motorists take advantage of the fact that there is no enforcement during these hours. During Thursday’s drive, the police found that a majority of the violations had taken place on Residency Road, Richmond Road, Lavelle Road, Museum Road, Queen’s Road, Cunningham Road, Infantry Road and a few roads in Shivajinagar.
Many of the violations were made by taxis attached to call centres. Saleem said the traffic police will continue the drive. The police will conduct surprise checks randomly during the early hours, he said.
Meanwhile the police also conducted a special drive on Thursday to check auto rickshaws for faulty exhausts leading to excess emission and charging excess fare from passengers. The police booked 436 cases against auto rickshaw drivers and collected a fine amount of Rs. 37,800.
