BANGALORE: The new satellite bus terminal of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) on Mysore Road, to be opened for use on August 28, has notable architectural features.
Located opposite the Gali Anjaneya Temple, it will be the first of the four satellite terminals planned in the city's peripheral areas. It will also reduce the load on the Kempe Gowda Bus Station by handling about 2,250 long-distance and city bus services. The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) buses will have space for operating its services from within the terminal.
"By stopping many inter-State buses such as those going towards Kerala at Mysore Road, traffic congestion will also be reduced within the city,'' KSRTC officials said.
For South-bound passengers to places such as Mysore, Madikeri and Kerala, it will become easy because shuttle bus services are also to be operated from the suburbs. The 20 shuttle services will serve Banashankari, Jayanagar, Vijayanagar and Nagarbhavi, among other areas.
The new terminal has been designed on three levels, taking advantage of the sloping terrain. Level I will house a commercial complex and the terminus for BMTC buses, and Level II will be for KSRTC services. Level III is to be bus depot where 75 buses can be parked and serviced. The long-distance terminus will have 28 departure bays capable of handing 2,000 departures during an 18-hour period. The three-platform BMTC terminus can handle 18 buses and 3,000 departures. The long-distance and city buses will have separate exits.
The terminus will have a restaurant, Yatri Nivas, coffee shops, clean toilets, shops, a business centre and cyber cafe, modular seating and good lighting. Monitoring of bus movements through closed circuit TV and parking facilities at the ground level are among the facilities planned. The BMTC terminus with a pedestrian subway for safety will also have shops and toilets.
Taking a cue from airlines, the KSRTC terminus will have an air-conditioned waiting room for passengers travelling on its deluxe long-distance services. There will be stands for prepaid taxis and autorickshaws in addition to the shuttle buses. The arrival lounge at the concourse level will have a section for collecting checked-in luggage as at an airport.
