IBM on Thursday launched a new Services Innovation and Research Center at Bangalore in India. The center will work in close collaboration with IBM's Global Services group to develop innovative technologies and solutions that improve their operational and delivery capabilities.

The Services Innovation and Research Center will be an extended arm of IBM's India Research Lab (IRL), headquartered in New Delhi. IRL, one of the eight research labs of IBM worldwide, was established in 1998 to tap the rich intellect and technical talent in India in expanding the frontiers of science and technology and transfer innovations to IBM's products and services. Since inception, IRL has emerged as a premier research lab in the country with an impressive list of achievements and an unmatched talent pool.

The launch of the Services Innovation and Research Center is yet another reflection of IBM's growing emphasis on enhancing its capabilities as a leader in services. The Center will draw upon resources from IRL and IBM's software and services organizations to focus on building technologies to add value to IBM's operations in the region and globally as well.

These technologies will address a wide scope of issues in the IT services landscape including workforce efficiency, asset reusability, improved methodologies and delivery capabilities on a global scale. The Center will also focus on enhancing IBM's 'On Demand' offerings in the services business by developing tailor-made solutions for its delivery groups thereby adding greater value to clients world over.

Dr .P Gopalakrishnan, Director, IBM's India Research Lab, said, "This initiative is a major step by the India Research Lab in playing a critical role in delivering innovations to IBM and its clients. IRL has evolved as a center for deep scientific research and development of innovative business solutions. There is a wealth of science and technology that can be applied to increase the range of capabilities of our services organization as well as impact the quality and efficiency of existing operations."

The new center will be headed by Dr. Guruduth Banavar and will be staffed with researchers with a wide variety of backgrounds including distributed computing, software engineering and knowledge management, as well as domain experts in the areas of IT services.
