Plea challenging flyover dismissed

Bangalore: A High Court division Bench dismissed a petition challenging the Anand Rao Circle flyover on Thursday making an observation that "let the authorities take charge and bring about improvements. In matters like these it is the experts who have to take the decision.''
The petitioner, B.G. Sridhar of Rathna Traffic Management Group, had appealed to the HC that the work on Anand Rao Circle flyover should be put off because it was a waste of public money and that authorities should instead have a one-way system for better traffic management. The petitioner had also challenged the flyover project because the project was being executed on a tank-bed area where the flyover would sink because of loose soil. He had previously filed a complaint on this issue with the BCC who had not taken action.
The BDA said it had taken the opinion of experts and carried out sub-soil studies. They had also consulted traffic and transport experts and the Central Road Research Institute (New Dehli) regarding the project.
The BDA said that flyover was better than one-ways to manage traffic because they avoid delays at intersections. One-ways do not allow for unhindered movement at intersections and junctions, like flyovers do. The BDA also said the Anand Rao Circle flyover was about 50% complete and Rs 14 crore had already been spent on the project.
The HC dismissed the writ petition with the observation "Rathna Traffic Management Group is a self-styled group involved in traffic management in the city without being recognised by any government agency''.
