BANGALORE: Leaders across different parties, on Friday, spoke out against the reduction of the city’ Green Belt area. At a discussion held by the Arkavathi Kumudavathi Rejuvenation Association on Friday, former Chief Minister M Veerappa Moily of the Congress, JD(U) state president B Somashekhar and BJP MLC Ramchandra Gowda sought withdrawal of BDA’s Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP).

Voicing his opinion against the CDP, Moily said it seemed the plan was formed under pressure from builders. He lamented that the present land use system had no transparency and that the revised CDP without any amendments will make corruption more deep-rooted.

“The CDP, if implemented without any changes will invite problems for citizens. It will act as a reactive measure to illegal land users,” he said.

Somashekhar too expressed similar sentiments. He said the CDP will encourage existing illegal layouts. “The government has failed to take action against illegal layouts in the Green Belt. The CDP is a classic example of how it has succumbed to builders,” he said. He also advocated development of satellite towns.

Ramachandra Gowda expressed his displeasure over the depleting Green Belt, which, he said will be visible only on paper after some years. He said that there were 336 unauthorised layouts were in 2000 but no action was taken against them. “More than 15 resorts are there. It is not built because of profits but because the value of the land is growing,” he said.
