The eighth edition of Bangalore IT.com, it seems, will be the first edition of Bangalore IT.in.

The change of name was announced at a programme for the launch of IT.com, now, IT.in – 2005 and conferring the Karnataka Best IT Exports Awards, held at the Hotel Grand Ashok on Friday.

Dayanidhi Maran, Union Minister for Communications and IT, described the matter of “putting IT next to India” as being “so close to my heart”.

Mr Maran acknowledged that infrastructure was a problem, and revealed one of the projects he had in mind – an elevated highway from Bangalore to Hosur. This had been suggested in a meeting he had held with the Infosys management last year. He said that he had suggested it to T R Baalu, and “in a month’s time, it will become a reality”. He however warned of what promised to be a trying time during the construction and asked the government to do all it could to ease the pain.

As for the long-standing wish of Chief Minister N Dharam Singh for an STPI in Gulbarga, “sir, it will be done”, he declared, before striding off the stage.

Mr Dharam Singh said, while software was being given all the backing it needed, the government was also planning a hardware park near the International Airport being built at Devanahalli. He asked the Central government for the required money for the project.

The awards were conferred upon companies in various categories including major Indian company, foreign equity company, fastest growing Small and Medium Enterprise, ITES company. Awards were also given to companies in towns like Mysore, Mangalore and Hubli.
