Road cutting for laying private sanitary and drinking water supply lines will not be allowed in the new wards after December 31, Mayor R Narayanaswamy said on Wednesday.
The move comes in the backdrop of the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike’s (BMP) decision to outsource maintenance of roads (measuring 1,230 kms) to private contractors and to take up asphalting work on 976 kms of roads in the City.
Speaking to reporters after launching two new web-enabled services on the BMP’s official website - ‘www.bmponline.org’, Mr Narayanaswamy said, “All road cutting works should be completed before road asphalting work commences. No fresh permission will be given for free road cutting for the next one year after the roads are asphalted.”
Details on website
Mr Narayanswamy said details with regard to outsourcing of road maintenance and asphalting works have been posted on the BMP’s website for the benefit of the residents. The works have been divided into 12 packages and the total cost of project is Rs 18 crore. The contractors have been directed to fill potholes, restore roads, remove debris, clear roadside drains, install road name-boards and level footpaths. The names of the contractors, the roads identified for repair and the estimated costs have also been posted on the website, he said.
Speaking on the occasion, BMP’s Additional Commissioner (Finance) P K Srihari said residents too will be involved in the execution of the projects. “The BMP will identify citizens and residents’ welfare associations to monitor the work of the private contractors and to report the progress that has been made”, he said. Such citizens or residents’ welfare organisations will be called ‘Marga mitras’, he added. Weekly updates of completed asphalt works will be posted ward-wise on the net and this would enable the residents to know what the ground reality is, Mr Srihari added.
