Bangalore, Dec. 8: Mayor R. Narayanaswamy on Wednesday launched web-enabled services which will help citizens monitor the progress of road maintenance and asphalting work given to private contractors in the city. Speaking on the occassion, Mr Narayanaswamy said citizens could complain to the authorities if they came across sub-standard work or any kind of irregularity in the asphalting work on the website.

BCC engineer-in-chief Rame Gowda said that the website had been uploaded with meticulous details about road maintenance and asphalting projects carried out by various agencies in the city. “We have uploaded details like ward-wise maps, length of the roads on which work is being carried out, the name of the contractor, the project cost and the deadline for the project,” he disclosed.

Additionally the website also has a facility to enable citizens to register their comments and suggestions.
Mr Rame Gowda said that around 500 kms of roads in the city are being asphalted by the BCC at a cost of Rs 130 crores. Over 1,230 kms of road had been handed over to private contractors for maintenance for the next three years at a cost of Rs 18 crores. “We have set a nine-point norm for contractors to carry out maintenance work,” he explained.

Replying to a query, Mr Rame Gowda said the website would be updated every Saturday to give the progress made on the work including the number of potholes filled during the week, the length of roads asphalted, the number of cracks filled, the sign boards painted and the replacement of railings on bridges and footpath slabs. He said the BCC is also planning to introduce a scheme “Marga Mitra” aimed at involving local residents associations in the monitoring of ongoing projects.
