Bangalore: It took more than five months for the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) to get the nod from Bangalore Race Course authorities to widen the Race Course road.
The Race Course compound wall is being demolished to start work on the Rs 27.60-crore project spanning from Khodays Circle to Subbanna Circle, with a loop descending on the Ramaswamy Road near Janata Dal office.
BDA officials said construction of the proposed 805-metre flyover at Anand Rao Circle would ease the traffic congestion by 47 per cent and reduce the traffic signal delay to 15.13 seconds from 50.71 seconds. BDA has decided to construct the flyover starting from Government Hospital to Subbanna Circle. It is a 16-month project and the work commenced in July this year.
Talking to Vijay Times, BDA Assistant Executive Engineer C Muniswamappa said, "During peak hours (from 10 am to 11 am), about 16,360 Passenger Car Units (PCUs) pass through Anand Rao Circle, while the actual capacity is 9,600. This figure is likely to touch 19,000 and 25,000 PCUs by 2011 and 2023 respectively."
"This flyover has been taken up on priority basis. To prove that we don't build flyovers randomly, we have calculated the proposed traffic outflow till 2023," Muniswamappa added.
In all, this flyover will have 19 piers. The longest obligatory span measuring 49 metre and 15 piers will come up between Anand Rao Circle and Subbanna Circle. It will facilitate five-lane traffic from Khodays Circle to Anand Rao Circle and four-lane traffic from thereon. The loop will have two-lane traffic. The traffic will merge at the Fire Station.
"Out of 15 pits, we found electric cables in 12 places at the depth of two metres. We have requested BESCOM to shift the cables and they agreed to do it by Friday. Other utilities such as telephone, water and sewage are also being shifted. Race Course officials have shifted 87 stables," said BDA Assistant Executive Engineer, Nagendra
Traffic will be suspended between Anand Rao Circle to Subbanna Circle from January end till the completion of the flyover. Race Course Road is being widened by five metres to allow one way traffic from Janata Dal office side to Subbanna Circle. "We hope to complete the project by August 27, 2005, or else it will be extended by another three months," he added.
