PWD begins work on three major roads in City

Bangalore: The much-criticised roads of the City are finally getting a facelift with the Public Works Department (PWD) beginning work on Bannerghatta, Sarjapur and Airport roads, which is scheduled to be completed by March end.

After inspecting project works in several parts of the City, PWD Minister H D Revanna told reporters on Wednesday that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed with three private firms to develop the three roads and the deadline for this was March 31.

The construction work costing Rs 34 crore on the three roads had begun and was among 10 projects recommended by the committee formed by the State Government to study the need for quality infrastructure in the city.
Revanna said the Bangalore City Corporation (BCC) would contribute Rs 3 crore for the project and the rest would be invested equally by private firms and PWD departments.

A committee has been set up on Sep 29 to examine the MoU between the Government and the private firms. The committee had identified 10 roads for improvement at an estimated cost of Rs 88 crore.
Hyderabad-type planning needed

Revanna said a long-term plan on the Hyderabad model was required to improve the City's infrastructure.
The Hyderabad model has roads with space on either sides for future road-widening programmes.

He said the need for flyovers and wide roads in the City would be brought to the notice of the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister.

Pot holes
Revanna said Rs 100 crore have been allotted to fill all the pot holes in the State and the work had already begun in the City. "Nearly 75 per cent of the work in the City has been completed and we are also re-tarring certain roads," he added.
