Stench of BCC’s failure rising to the heavens

BANGALORE: Banglore City Corporation (BCC)’s big claims about the success of its ‘‘Swachacha Banglore’’ and ‘‘Nirmala Bangalore’’ projects, have come to naught in Jayachamarajendranagar area in the heart of the city. The locality stinks to high heavens and is overflowing with uncleared garbage.

Pemmegowda Main Road in J.C. Nagar is a fine example of how these hyped projects of the civic agency have totally failed. While the conservancy lane has turned into a public urinal, garbage is strewn on the road.

The situation is so bad that people on the road have to hold their noses as they pass by. Shop owners on the road too complain about BCC’s negligence.

‘‘We can’t sit in our shops because of the stench,’’ says Murthy, owner of a studio. ‘‘Sometime ago the local corporator had promised to construct a small public urinal, but so far nothing has been done,’’ he added.

Riyaz, owner of a bakery says, ‘‘In spite of several complaints to the BCC and the corporator, no action has been taken, except for some cleaning sometime ago. ‘‘Our customers ask us how we sit here from morning to night, when they can not stand the bad odour even for a minute,’’ he says.

The garbage collected door-to-door is dumped on the road itself from where, the BCC vehicle collects it. But, by evening the place is littered with garbage again, this time the refuse occupying half of the road space.

This ‘‘dumping yard’’ has become haven for stray dogs and cattle. It also resulted in traffic congestion on the narrow street. ‘‘Since there is not much place for vehicles, peak hour traffic jams have become a regular affair,’’ says Balaji, a resident of the locality.

Another resident Prakash Rao said residents were forced to throw garbage on the road as the dumpster was removed.

Will the BCC wake up ?
