Traffic department wants to hire 1700 mannequins

That is what Bangalore's traffic cops really are. Dumb mannequins. I doubt if anyone has ever seen a traffic cop haul up any motorist for traffic violations. Of course, towards the end of the month they come alive to harass innocent motorists and make a quick buck.

Traffic needs 1700 additional cops to streamline flow

Bangalore: Lack of manpower and good roads in the city are the major hurdles faced by the City Traffic police department in regulating and streamlining the growing traffic in the city.
Police Commissioner S Mariswamy said that there were over 1700 vacancies in the traffic department. Besides there was a need for good roads if the city traffic problems had to be set right to some extent. Speaking to Vijay Times on Wednesday, he said that the general recruitment which was on would only fill the vacancies caused by retirement but an additional force of over 1700 people was needed to maintain the traffic.
The major bottleneck is the bad and narrow roads besides the fast growth of registration of vehicles. The government needs to address these problems first. Moreover the roads in the outskirts need to be broadened and junctions to be cleared for smooth flow of heavy vehicle traffic. "We are also working to stop all the heavy trucks entering the city, but all these needs planning and co-ordination," he said.
On strengthening the public transport system by introducing thousands of mini-buses (like the one used in grameena sarige) to reduce people using their own vehicle, he said the department was working on a dedicated bus route in the city. Once this was implemented such proposals could be considered. However, the fast growth and spread of the city needs alternative transport system and if the Metro rail was implemented soon there could be some relief. Mariswamy, considered the man behind the one-way concept, said that the one-way introduced in major arterial roads have helped in clearing peak hour traffic in important junctions.
