New bus stand will cut traffic

“BMTC is in the process of con- structing a multi- facility bus station at Kalasipalya on five acres of land provided by Bruhat Bangalore Mahana- gar Palike. This will be used as a terminus for more than 4,000 private buses which make about 1,500 trips in and out of the city” .

New bus stand will cut traffic From From August, the central areas of Bengaluru will see lesser traffic congestion as the bus stand meant for them at Kalasipalya will be shifted temporarily.
Around 4,000 private buses will be restricted from entering the main roads putting an end to unauthorised bus services operating in the city.

Private bus operators are seen as one of the biggest traffic violators on Bengaluru’s roads. Most of these buses arrive from other parts of the state and are parked at the Kalasipalya bus stand and ply between City Market to other areas to make some extra money.

A senior official of the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) told Deccan Chronicle: “BMTC is in the process of constructing a multi-facility bus station at Kalasipalya on five acres of land provided by Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagar Palike (BBMP). This will be used as a terminus for more than 4,000 private buses which make about 1,500 trips in and out of the city.” The private buses are usually overloaded and overspeed through heavy traffic and even through school zones.

“These buses from various parts of the state and neighbouring states will be provided parking facility at places like Yeshwanthpur, Hosur Road, and Mysore

Road on the city’s periphery along the state or national highways through which they enter,” added the official.
The buses will also be given designated parking space at the Binny Mill yard until other alternatives are found to avoid traffic congestion. No decision has been taken on shifted them to the outskirts of the city, say BBMP officials.

“If private buses are shifted from Kalasipalya, it will be difficult for them to operate inside city limits.

These buses are overloaded and usually seen overspeeding even in heavy traffic. This is a good move and the authorities must ensure that they are not seen operating within the city,” said Ravi Shastri, a BMTC bus passenger.
