BANGALORE: After attempting to solve the city’s parking woes, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has now decided to clean up its own backyard.
In an effort to accommodate the ever-increasing number of vehicles at its premises, the BBMP will now invest in a multi-storied parking. In order to provide parking space for its elected representatives, the Palike will soon invite consultants and designs for the multi-storied parking.
With the increase in the number of BBMP wards from 100 to 198, the elections will see twice the number of elected representatives, resulting in a manifold increase in the number of vehicles, said an official.
“The empty space available at the BBMP premises will be used for the multi-storied parking,” MP Prakash, Chief Engineer (Markets) told Express.
Prakash added that the design for the parking lot, which will be able to accommodate a minimum of 500 cars, will be invited by the BBMP in the next few weeks.
“The concept will be the deciding factor in the approval of the design,” he said, adding that the premises attract over one hundred vehicles every day.
Sources said the parking lot will be open for administrators and councillors and later for the public, based on availability of space.
“There is a proposal to charge the public for parking,” said an official.
If everything goes according to the plan, the parking lot should be ready within one year, said Prakash.
Though the cost of the project is still being estimated, it will be prepared in the next few weeks, he added.
