Saplings in danger of dying

GOOD INTENTIONS BUT…: Jayanagar Residents’ Welfare Association says the civic body should hand over the maintenance of these saplings to others.
Bangalore: A large number of saplings planted by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) three months ago are in danger of perishing under the harsh February sun. These saplings, planted on the median on 11th Main Road, Jayanagar 4th T Block, have not been watered for weeks.

N. Mukund from the Jayanagar Residents’ Welfare Association told The Hindu: “These saplings have not been watered regularly. Most are wilting and some have even died. Residents have complained several times to the civic authority but to no avail.”

Mr. Mukund suggested that the BBMP hand over the maintenance of these saplings before they all disappear, either to the residents’ welfare associations, non-governmental organisations or corporates. “The intention behind planting saplings is appreciable but what is the point if the civic authority lets them wither and die?” he asked.

Moreover, he said, when the BBMP’s Horticulture Department decides to water the saplings, potable water is used. “We have complained about it so many times. Instead of using potable water, the department can use recycled water,” he suggested.

Jayanagar MLA B.N. Vijayakumar is also annoyed over such insensitivity. “I complained to the BBMP several times over the past three months. My office has also maintained the record of the written complaints that I have filed in this connection,” he said.

He said that he had urged the department to direct its ward officials to ensure that all the saplings and trees are watered at least two times a week.

The civic authorities could make use of available water sources, such as community wells and tanks, to water the saplings instead of using potable water.

When contacted, a senior official from the BBMP’s Horticulture Department said that he would look into the issue and ensure that the saplings are watered regularly.
