BANGALORE: Around 100 students of the university of agriculture sciences (UAS) held a protest against BBMP’s plan to construct a road cutting across the Gandhi Krishi Vignana Kendra (GKVK) campus of the university on Saturday.
The protest held at the Thindlu entrance of the campus was joined by local residents, farmers’ groups and environmentalists in support of the students.
The students said that even though a case related to the construction of the road was pending in the High court, BBMP was still constructing the road clearly violating the court.
“BBMP’s decision to build a road through our campus is both unethical and illegal,” said the students.
Kumar, one of the students, said that the road was unwelcome as the campus was designated as a development zone for advanced research institutions and education centres due to its serene and undisturbed ecological and environmental integrity.
However, he said, much of the dedicated land is being acquired for road construction, which results in nonavailability of land and resources for the longterm development of inter-disciplinary scientific institutions within the campus.
