Rain in City over next two days
Bangalore, Dec 27, DHNS:
As the City and the State gear up to celebrate the new year eve, 2010, light rainfall have put a dampener with the Indian Meteorological Department forecasting more rain over the next two days.
The showers lasted for nearly two hours from 6 to 8 pm on Sunday evening. The Met Department said the rainfall was due to the north-east monsoon weather system and wasexpected.
“The rainfall was only 22 mm, and not heavy by our parameters,” the department said. It is expected that for the next two days the City may witness light showers and the sky will mainly be cloudy.
The rains came as a surprise for the citizens as the skies turned dark towards Sunday evening. Unprepared and unforeseen, in the month of December, people were seen running for cover from the rain and biting cold that ensued.
Traffic was reported to be smooth in the entire City except for slow movement at a couple of places. “The rains did not affect the traffic movement much. We however, received reports of slow moving traffic in Okalipuram for a short duration,” said DCP (Traffic) P H Rane. The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) meanwhile reported no untoward incident with only one tree fall in J P Park along Magadi Road. There were no reports of water-logging from anywhere in the City.
Citizens cautioned
Dr H Paramesh, director, Lakeside Hospital, said that the sudden thunderstorm and rains in winter certainly makes the weather more conducive for viral infections. "Respiratory illnesses, allergies, vector borne diseases are some of the other health problems that can be expected in such a weather," he said.
He suggested that people who suffer from chronic asthma continue taking preventive medicines till the end of winter. “Early morning exercise during winters leads to stress on lungs and heart. It is also better to use mosquito nets than mosquito coils,” he said. Parmesh advised people who were keen on physical excercise to postpone their routine only after 12 pm.
He added that people should also follow the precautions given for H1N1 Influenza, that is, covering mouth while coughing or sneezing, washing hands frequently, etc.
