Minister wields the broom for ‘Zero Garbage’

Bangalore: Surprise was in store for many who came to attend the launch of “Zero Garbage” project in Rajajinagar as Minister for Law, Parliamentary Affairs and Urban Development S. Suresh Kumar got into the act and took the broom to clean a street near Sri Ram Mandir on Saturday.

Participating in a programme organised by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to launch the project in Ram Mandir and Basaveshwaranagar wards, the Minister swept a stretch of the street.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Suresh Kumar said that the city generated more than 2,500 tonnes of waste/garbage daily. “Not many people are aware of safe segregation and disposal of waste. We hope to launch the “Zero Garbage” project on a pilot basis in at least two wards in all Assembly constituencies in the city and extend it to other wards in a phased manner,” he said, and added that the door-to-door collection of waste would continue.

A high-level meeting would be convened on January 4 to discuss the growing menace of flex boards, which had been banned in the radius of one km around the Vidhana Soudha, Mr. Suresh Kumar told presspersons later.

He said that this decision was taken after members of the Legislative Council, cutting across party lines, came down heavily on the growing menace of flex boards. A squad had been formed to ensure that flex boards were not put up.
